Roles and Responsibilities Of Field Engineer
-Be conversant with the technical and commercial aspects of the projects and to have a full understanding of the scope of work, as provided be the Project Manager/Vessel Superintendent.-To prepare offshore operations procedures at the requested by Project Manager.
-To prepare task plans during offshore operation based on the installation procedures.
-To become familiar with all the vessel operation/limitations, in order to improve design, operational schedule, procedures and safety.-Participate in daily project meetings and toolbox talks.
-Liase with coordinate the activities of vendors and subcontractors as and when required as part of the Project, without commercial authority.
-Implement and organise any approved modifications to the Project, ensuring all changes are fully documentedand included in the appropriate documents.
Roles and Responsibilities Of Pipeline Engineer
-Review Client's technical documentation and requirements.
-Prepare the design and basis/CTRs for the pipeline design and interface with the relative process and structures and installation.
-Check the result of surveys carried out by sub-contractors and optimise the laying route.
-Assist with the selection of spread/methods and perform/review installation design analysis for the pipeline system.
-Assist the pipeline lead or the project engineering manager for solving technical problems arising during project development and the interfacing/supporting the procurement department.
-Perform/verify all discipline analyses and calculation notes required to design the pipelines system, including the engineering activities of third parties/sub contractors.
-Define Standards and procedures for the relative engineering area and contribute to software evaluations.
-Solve all the engineering problems arisen from day to day installation works.
-To ensure safe and efficient offshore installation operations.
-To find the optimum and the best rectification design of any repair.
-Engineering analysis scope of work details :
Pipelay analyses using pipelay barge.
Riser installation & davit lifts analyses.
Pipeline Spanning calculations
Stinger ballast calculations check.
Pipeline sidewalking analyses.
Abandonment & recovery analyses.
Pipeline bowstring & anchor start-up
Mid point tie-in analyses.

For me, at the early stage of your carreer better become a field engineer. This is because maybe you're not married and most importantly no issues on family.
Becoming a field engineer give you a chance to manage the project in offshore and you can learn a lot the construction management and etc.
After you get the installation understanding and idea then you can ready to go for next stage which is installation engineering (Pipeline Engineer).
On calculation side, Field engineer actually did rigging/lifting calculation,anchor pattern, padeye calculation and anchor buoy calculation.

The Pipeline Engineer that you described is for design consultant or OIC?
I'm confused. Those Pipeline Engineer in OIC who go offshore...are they Pipeline Engineer or Field Engineer?
What about becoming Pipeline Engineer in design consultant first then only join OIC? I thought it's better than becoming F.E -------> P.E

These actually the scope of work for pipeline engineer in OIC (sorry coz make you confuse). Pipeline engineer is doing the installation engineering analysis as I describe in my post. Going offshore is only as requested by OCS(Offshore Construction Superintendent).
But for field engineer, more than 80% of their scope of work are at offshore.
For your 2nd question, I'm 100% agree about that. But, it's subjective. What I means is to be a good pipeline engineer at least you need be balance between design and installation. This is important when you become a project manager/lead engineer, where all the design that you produce can realize in offshore.
Back to my experience again, when I in consultant before, I thought that what I'm design can be realize at least 80% in offshore. But I'm wrong, because when I'm in OIC, so far I've face some problem to suit between design and installation. To solve it we need to make a lot of modification. These situation are really important if you have a design knowledge because all modification that you made still covers the standards and procedure as stated from clients.

I just found your interesting blog and your impressive CV. I have 2 years working experience and only 1 years experience in pipeline. My company was involved in FEED and detailed engineering.
I have a few questions need you to share:
1. ive been involved in designing subsea pipeline and riser. Is that PLEM and stinger are one of the pipeline engineer SOW? What others scope?
2. im also using design software like AGA, AUTOPIPE, MATHCAD, CAESAR and MOSES. Different company using different software. For the next company (if I plan to change work at other company) I should choose the company using same software or not?
3. Basically I only involved in Engineering. My company not involve in installation. is that affect when I apply with other company that involved in installation (EPCC)? Because I really interested in Installation to now what actually happen on site.
4. Usually I familiar with ASME, DNV, API, ASTM and ISO. Refer to your CV, you familiar with PTS. Is that affect my CV if im planning to work with company who work with Petronas?
Another things...maybe you can post what pipeline eng did in Engineering (like a list) like analysis for wall thick.,end expansion, external corrosion, stress analysis etc so people can get overview all also for field engineer. Then elaborate what should include in those analysis (generally).Its good for graduate eng.

Actually all that related to pipeline is the pipeline SOW. PLEM, PLET, Riser, Stinger is a part of pipeline SOW. The SOW that I post previously is more on SOW in Contractor. Soon I’ll post the SOW in consultant and pipeline design sequence.
No. 2
Maybe you’re not understand the situation of engineering software in Malaysia or other country. For example, all consultant and contractor will used the same software as what you mention above. But everything it’s depends on client which one software their interested. Soon I’ll also post the softwares related to pipeline as per I used before and currently.
No. 3
Not effect, but it’s good because you’ll know what you’re doing and can realize it. As now on, my advise is please understand the concept of engineering design or engineering installation so that it would be helpful when you involve in construction soon.
No. 4
If you can understand with all the standard that you mention above, it’s already enough for you to familiarize the PTS or other client codes and standards because for example PTS, is respect to ASME/DnV/API/ASTM/ISO and other international standard.
No. 5
I’ve already do that and currently I’m just discussed the pipeline wall thickness and on bottom stability. You can view on my previous post in my Blog. I'll promise will post every info of pipeline design sequence till installation.
